No matter the level of fear or anxiety you may feel when you think about going to the dentist, Dr. Lee Lichtenstein can help you have a pleasant dental experience.

What Is Sedation Dentistry?

Sedation dentistry refers to the selective use of sedation with dental treatment. There are a variety of options available from mild sedation to general anesthesia. Sedation provides a solution to help patients with dental anxiety or phobia to relax.

What Is Sleep Dentistry?

“Sleep Dentistry” is another term that’s sometimes used for sedation dentistry because patients often sleep with some sedation methods.  Sleep dentistry may not be  an entirely accurate phrase when it comes to sedation dentistry. Patients are usually awake with the exception of those who are under general anesthesia.

The sedative methods used for sedation dentistry vary in strength and purpose. Dr. Lee Lichtenstein will select the sedation dentistry option that is best for you based on the treatments performed, how long these procedures will take and your level of anxiety.

The levels of sedation used include:

  • Minimal sedation — you are awake but relaxed.
  • Moderate sedation (formerly called “conscious sedation”) — you may slur your words when speaking and not remember much of the procedure.
  • Deep sedation — you are on the edge of consciousness but can still be awakened.
  • General anesthesia — you are completely unconscious.

**According to the Academy of General Dentistry, sedation is safe. In order to ensure that the appropriate sedatives are used, Dr. Lee Lichtenstein will require a medical history and list of all medications you are taking – including over the counter products and herbal supplements.

Benefits

One of the major benefits of sedation dentistry is that people often feel like their dental procedure lasts only a few minutes, when in fact it might have taken hours to perform. Therefore, complex dental procedures such as smile makeovers or extensive rebuilding procedures that normally require multiple visits can often be performed in fewer appointments.

If you are reluctant to change the appearance of your smile because you are afraid or anxious about undergoing long or complicated dental procedures, sedation dentistry can make you feel comfortable during the treatment process and help you achieve a smile you can be proud of.

Also, because sedation dentistry addresses some of the fears that keep people from going to the dentist on a regular basis, sedation dentistry patients are more likely to receive recommended routine care. As a result, they are less likely to neglect their oral health or allow oral health problems to build to the point when drastic dental treatments become necessary.
