Sit Back Relax and Enjoy Your Smile
No one likes going to the dentist, let’s face it. Somewhere between 5 and 8% of Americans avoid dental care because they are scared. An Additional 20% say they go to the dentist only when they can no longer avoid it. There is actual a phobia, Dental Phobia, because it is a real issue for 50 million Americans. But why?
- Believe it or not, there is an evolutionary instinct to protect your airways.
- Many people feel vulnerable, laying back in the dentist’s chair where they do not control their situation.
- Many people with Dental Phobia have suffered with these fears since they were children. Possibly they had an unpleasant experience with a dentist in the past.
- Others have an anxiety disorder unrelated to a dentist that may be causing their dental phobia.
- Anxiety of anything unknown can be a problem.
- There is occasional discomfort during your standard dental visit and tensing up makes it worse.
- If you have ever experienced pain at the dentist, your anticipation causes you stress.
- Special needs patients react differently and have different requirements.
- Patients have medical needs and physical disabilities have anxiety about their care and their ability to be treated.
Avoiding the dentist can be bad news.
You are neglecting your dental health and allowing your possibly small problems to grow larger and more severe, leading to a prolonged visit and the necessity of additional care. Your oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions. Your mouth is naturally filled with various bacteria which, when out of control causes oral infections such as tooth decay and gum disease. Unchecked, these infections can spread to other parts of the body such as the heart, or brain, or prosthetic joints.
Here is the good news.
Meet Dr. Lee Lichtenstein!
Dr. Lichtenstein has the distinction of being one of a very select few Board-Certified Dentist Anesthesiologists in the United States, besides being a general dentist. This sets his practice apart from other dentists as his practice uses Sedation Dentistry. Other dentists offer sedation without Dr. Lichtenstein’s level of training, certification and over 20 years of experience. He and his staff take special care to put you at ease and make your dental experience a pleasant one.
Sedation dentistry uses medication to help patients relax during dental procedures. Patients are usually awake with the exception of those who are under general anesthesia. There are several levels of sedation used:
- Minimal sedation — you are awake but relaxed.
- Moderate sedation — you are awake but woozy.
- Deep sedation — you are on the edge of consciousness
- General anesthesia — you are completely unconscious.
- Nitrous Oxide (“sweet air” or “laughing gas”) (makes you feel happy & relaxed)
